Built in 1957, my client’s family’s home had never been updated. This kitchen and dine-in space renovation was the first real change this home experienced, and the Jackie Barnes Design Team was overjoyed to help in its transformation.
It was a functional kitchen design with easy-to-maintain countertops, standard appliances, and adequate lighting. Nothing was outright bad, and nothing was outright great. All of these elements added up to a less than ideal space for a vibrant family.
My client is a stay-at-home mom. We knew immediately what that meant: the kitchen is the main space she uses to care for her family. She spends most of her time here, yet it was the space she wanted to spend the least amount of time in.
Here are the non-negotiable design elements we brought into this space:
A sleek white stove — My client wanted white appliances, which are highly sought after as fewer appliances in this color are manufactured today. We knew this was a must as it would bring her a lot of joy in this space. (Brand: Fisher & Paykel)
Modern yet warm — Modern design can often get a bad rap for being too sterile and cold. Well, not on our watch! My client wanted this space to be inviting yet far from the outdated original design.
Custom… everything! — We love custom design pieces, and thankfully so does this family. This space wouldn’t be nearly as special without its custom cabinetry (by KEMP & Sims-Lohman) and backsplash tiles (by Sonoma Tilemakers).
This kitchen didn’t have a lot of available space for a dining area, but small space design is our forte! We used this tiny corner to create a dining space that allows the family to come together after a long day to connect.
We designed the custom banquette with built-in storage to add more space for kitchen items. The cushion atop the banquette is a faux leather covering foam, which is a functional choice that will help this family keep the space clean and fresh.
The shelf above the dining area adds a lot of character to the space, allowing my client to make it her own. Rather than have this space be consumed by the kitchen’s design, we allowed it to have its own special “moment.”
Adding so many custom pieces and designs to this space allowed us to create a space for my client and her family that she actually loves. Now, it brings her calm and rest. It invites her in, encouraging her to make cherished memories or take a moment for some peace and quiet.
Ever design choice for this project was taken to really hone in on bringing this space dimension and warmth. From the lighting to the wood selection to the custom tiles, every piece was specifically curated to meet this client’s expectations.
This family shared their home story with us, and we are so thankful for that.
