Let’s talk about stonework. What is it? How is it done? Why should you include it in your home?
Stonework, or stone masonry, is an intricate process that I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing in action first-hand. A lot of homeowners are curious about this process, so I am happy to shed light on it.
Stone working involves the techniques, processes, and art of designing with stone. Natural rock is often used for this craft, and you’ll usually find this work in the foundational pieces of a home, like arches or floors.
As an interior designer, I get to visit the stonework yard for my clients to select the material that is best for their project. Then, a stone worker will cut the stone into any shape we need. The great reality is that they can make pretty much anything out of stone – it’s amazing! I’ve asked stone masonries to create entire sinks out of stone for me. Take a look:
If it’s a 3D object, I’m sure a stone mason can get it done. This means that the unique pieces that might just be perfect for your project are not out of reach.
Here is a slow motion video I took at the stone yard that shows stone cutting at work. So satisfying!
This is easily one of the most asked questions about stone counters. If you’ve done even just five minutes of research, then you know there are stones that are more durable and less porous than others.
Now, that doesn’t mean one stone is better than the other. But depending on the stone’s purpose in your home – bathroom vanity, kitchen island, etc. – you might want to consider the makeup of the stone itself before jumping the gun.
Quartz is probably the lowest maintenance stone to work with because it’s manmade, unlike naturally occurring stone like granite. Quartz is non-porous, so it won’t stain – perfect for a kitchen setting! This engineered stone is very durable, leaving very little room for potential damage like cracking or chipping.
Each stone is inherently unique. You won’t find the same cut of granite in any other home, unless you’re buying something synthetic. Plus, the shape you request the stone be cut into can also be completely unique to you!
Stone allows you to think outside the box. When you think of stone pieces in your home, you may only be able to picture a stone sink. But the possibilities ventured far from that! You can use stone for your staircase, countertops, backsplashes, floors, walls, and more.
Depending on the stone you choose, it is extremely durable. This means you’ll reduce the cost of future maintenance on the pieces and it will last for years and years and years to come.
Stone is naturally fire resistant. This means it’s a great option especially for your kitchen. You can lay a hot pan on a stone counter – no sweat!
Stonework allows you to support your local craftspeople. This is a great way to support small businesses near you and give back to your community. In fact, here are some local vendors to check out:
Favorite fabricator: Bella Stone
Favorite vendors: Mont Surfaces and Daltile
Stonework is a great option for your home, and I highly recommend exploring the options it has to offer. You know I’ll be honest, so here’s the other shoe dropping… Stonework can cost a pretty penny, but that’s simply the nature of a home renovation; it all costs a pretty penny. Like I always say, if you’re doing things right, then you’re spending the bulk of your money on quality materials that will last for a long, long time. In the end, that actually saves you money!
