This year, our home is more essential than it’s ever been before.
We’re desperately converting spaces in our homes to use as gyms, offices, schools, restaurants, theaters, and more in the hope of maintaining some sort of routine in life. Our homes are everything to us, so it’s important to take care of them; investing time and money into your home is worth your sanity.
There’s a lot of advice on how to take care of our physical health — how to eat better and exercise more efficiently. We know that if we do the work to maintain our physical health, then our bodies will allow us to live better lives; we’ll play more with our kids, move through our day pain-free, and have less physical limitations overall. The same goes for taking care of our homes, and right now having a home that allows us to experience happier and stronger connections to our families, to move through our days with less stress, is vital.
Below are three simple ways you can take care of your home today, which will in turn provide you with the space and peace of mind you’re working toward.
Eliminate one pile of unnecessary clutter. For my family, this is usually school papers, and lucky us (??), all school directives are now digital. Feel free to toss the school lunch calendar and unsigned permission slips!
Establish one quiet corner for you and only you. This space can be used for reading, meditating, or polishing off the last sleeve of Thin Mints you’ve been hoarding in your freezer (hey, we all have our own survival techniques). Whatever you’re doing for your moments of peace, make sure it’s providing you with an opportunity for solitary recharging.
Let the light in. Light is life, and the instant you open the curtains you’ll likely feel so much better. Assess the artificial light in your home, changing the type of lighting that does nothing for your mood.
Well planned out spaces are worth the effort for the joy they produce. By surrounding ourselves with a home that bring us happiness and peace, we positively influence our behaviors and our overall physical and mental health.
